RAIN WATER HARVESTING
PROJECT AT RAJ BHAVAN, BHUBANESWAR.
The
average annual rain fall of Orissa is 1500 mm. The rainfall occurs
during short spells of high intensity. Most of the rain water
falling on the surface flows away rapidly as surface run-off
leaving very little for the ground recharge. So effective
conservation of rain water is important. This highlights the need
to implement measures to ensure that the rain water falling over a
region is tapped fully through a water harvesting system
either by recharging it into ground water aquifers or storing it
for direct use. Moreover, unplanned and uncontrolled extraction of
ground water has disturbed the hydrological balance leading to
decline in productivity of wells, rise in energy requirements and
deterioration of quality of water. Rapid over drawal of ground
water needs to be compensated with recharge of aquifers. Among
several methods, roof-top water harvesting is a low cost method to
recharge the ground water aquifers.
The Regional Director, Central Ground Water Board,
has taken up the surface water harvesting project at Raj Bhavan,
Bhubaneswar. The Scheme comprises 1500
mtrs long recharge trench of one metre wide and half metre deep
with iron mesh of 1.2 meter width to act as screen for filtering
the rain water, three nos. of deep bore
wells for recharge, one bore well for monitoring. The Rainwater
stored in such a way can be lifted mechanically in course of time.
The project cost is Rs. 13.5 lakhs.
The Project is
funded out of Government of India resources. The different
components such as recharge trenches and bore well sof project are
located (I) Behind Annexe Building (II) Near Children Park (III)
Near Deer Park behind Administrative Building. The bore well for
monitoring purpose is located near the Administrative building
cycle stand. The project was inaugurated on 03.08.2000 and handed
over to Chief Engineer, P.H.D.
Being the first
of its kind in Bhubaneswar, the project, besides being of immense
benefit in keeping the water level in the aquifers supply of
ground water to the Raj Bhavan at a high level, has an excellent
demonstrative potential for others to see and emulate in the city
of Bhubaneswar.
