DEER PARK

Background
:
Established on 2nd
October, 1973 and inagurated by the then Governor Shri B. D.
Jatti, over a small area of Ac. 1. (meant for maximum 10
animals) with a pair of spotted deer, 3 black bucks (one
male + two female). Addition of animals was made from
Nandankanan Zoo subsequently.
Additional area of about Ac. 1 on
southern side of Raj Bhavan was identified as second
enclosure in 1988. Executive Engineer, Capital Maintenance
Division No.-II undertook the construction work. The second
deer park was inaugurated by Dr. Nurul Husan, the then
Governor on 14th November, 1989 with 80 spotted deer and 2
black buck.
Maintenance :
The infrastructure maintenance is attended by the Works
Department and animal maintenance by the Forest Department.
Translocation Programme :
Release of surplus animals from Raj Bhavan to Chandaka
wildlife sanctuary was finalised in 1989 and 64 deer’s were
shifted by October, 94. Some 14 black bucks to Bhitarkanika
and a few spotted deer to Cuttack Municipality deer park
were also transfered. During last three years, release of
spotted deers to Chandaka Sanctuary has been 22 in 1999,
51 in 2000 and 138 in 2001.
